People of SGCI: Juan Martinez
Java Web Developer
Texas Advanced Computing Center
What is your role within SGCI and what do you do?
My role is within the Scientific Software Collaborative service area of SGCI as a Java Web Developer. I’m part of the Web and Mobile Applications group (WMA) at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC). My activities include supporting and developing software for a wide array of tools and applications while utilizing good software development practices. I also participate in the design and development of applications for SGCI, interact and collaborate with researchers to develop new features, and contribute to a technical team using various development methodologies in order to write, test, and deploy production-quality software services.
How did you come to be a part of SGCI, and why were you intrigued by the opportunity?
My boss Maytal Dahan is an active participant in the SGCI group, and I joined the team through her. She told me about the project and I loved it. I was impressed with the things this Institute is doing and I’m very happy to be part of a group that is making a positive impact in the community.
What is the most challenging part of your work for SGCI?
The most challenging part is at the same time the most exciting, which is staying in contact with cutting edge technology. For me, having the opportunity to learn and contribute makes every day gratifying.
How else are you involved in the technology or gateway community?
Besides my role with SGCI as a Java Web Developer I have 15 years of experience as a full stack developer. Being a full stack developer is very exciting for me because I have the chance to be involved in all stages of software development.
What do you most like to do in your free time?
I love gardening, I have my own edible plants, like tomato, corn, basil, etc. I spend time in my backyard reading — I love philosophy and horror stories. I enjoy traveling and trying food and craft beer.
If you were a superhero, what superpower would you have?
I would have the superpower to make all people share knowledge super fast and easily. I think knowledge is one of the most valuable assets, it would be super fun to have the ability to transmit big amounts of useful information between people.
