2019 Summer Internship Reports: Gilbert Curbelo III

Each year, our Workforce Development team offers summer internships for students interested in developing their gateway development skills. Eligible participants are placed at one of several SGCI partner sites. We will be sharing some of the experiences of our 2019 student interns in a series of blog posts entitled SGCI Summer Internship Reports.

Featured below is SGCI summer intern Gilbert Curbelo III, a recent graduate of California State University, Monterey Bay.

The people that work at TACC are some of the best people I have had the pleasure of working with. If anyone ever gets the opportunity to take part in an SGCI program, they would be mistaken not to take it. There was a lot of support throughout the program, and being able to carry that experience with you is awesome.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Gilbert Curbelo III. I was born in Monterey, CA, and graduated in May 2019 from California State University, Monterey Bay, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. I am currently living in San Mateo with my girlfriend and taking a course on game development.

Where did your internship take place, and who did you work with?

My internship took place at the Texas Advanced Computing Center in beautiful Austin, Texas. I worked as a research and software developer on the cloud development team under Joe Stubbs and his team members: Mike Packard, Anagha Jamthe, and Elias Chalhoub.

What are some things that you learned as a result of this internship?

I learned a lot from my two months working at TACC. We focused our research on the usability and scalability of SSH as the backbone of an API service (our paper even got accepted to the upcoming Bench '19 Symposium!). Not only did I learn a lot about the SSH technology itself, but I also solidified my skills with the Python programming language.

Do you see yourself engaging with SGCI again in the future? Perhaps when you begin your career?

SGCI offers awesome opportunities for students across the nation. If there is any way that I can contribute to that mission, I would be happy to do so.

Anything else to add about your internship experience?
