2020 Summer Internship Reports: Hang Jin

Each year, our Workforce Development team offers summer internships for students interested in developing their gateway development skills. Participants are placed at one of several SGCI partner sites. We will be sharing some of our 2020 student interns' experiences in a series of blog posts entitled SGCI Summer Internship Reports.

Featured below is SGCI summer intern Hang Jin, a Ph.D. student at George Washington University.


Tell us a little about yourself?

I am a Ph.D. student from George Washington University, and I'm a Mathematics major; my research area is focused on the analysis and Partial differential equation. More precisely, I studied the bubbles and droplets in a singular limit of the FitzHugh-Nagumo system. In such a scenario, we want to learn the stability of energy. To find the energy term's expression, we need to study the property of the green's function, and to see the critical point, we need to study the Bessel function related to this green's function. The stability of the energy is related to the size of the lattice and the area's sharpness. Also, it's different from 2-dimensional space and 3-dimensional space. In the 2-d case, we have shown that the least energy occurs in a unit circle, and in the 3-d case, the least energy occurs in a hexagon with the area.


Where did your Internship take place, and who did you work for?

I worked with Bruce Palfey's lab at the University of Michigan. I also worked with Dr. Palfey and Ms. Robert, who is the research assistant and technician of Palfey's lab. Also, I work with Dr. Hayden from SGCI.


What are some things that you learned as a result of this internship?

My program is to establish a website of a search interface connected to Neo4j database. The program is divided into two parts, the first one and the easier one use HTML, CSS, and Javascript to build the search interface. The second one is to use python or Django to connect the search interface with Neo4j database. I have learned some coding in HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I have established a simple web search sample. In the future, I will try to study coding in python to finish this program.


Do you see yourself engaging with SGCI again in the future? Perhaps when you begin your career?

I think the coding program is exciting, and SGCI is also a very nice company. Everyone I met is very kind and helpful to me.
