2020 Summer Internship Reports: William Clark

Each year, our Workforce Development team offers summer internships for students interested in developing their gateway development skills. Participants are placed at one of several SGCI partner sites. We will be sharing some of our 2020 student interns' experiences in a series of blog posts entitled SGCI Summer Internship Reports.

Featured below is SGCI summer intern William Clark, a student at Dixie State University.

"The internship has helped me prepare for my future and dive further into the math community."

Tell us a little about yourself?

I am currently an undergraduate at Dixie State University, majoring in mathematics and minoring in American Sign Language. I have been married for two years and have an eight-month-old daughter named Lucy, my world. I am fluent in American Sign Language, love taking hikes, and enjoy vacationing with my family.

Where did your Internship take place, and who did you work for?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I participated in this internship at home, participating in group calls over Zoom. I worked for SIMIODE under the director Brian Winkel, with Anthony Stefan, a grad student in Florida.

What are some things that you learned as a result of this internship?

I learned how much to plan and execute a mathematical competition and understood the scale of the mathematical community.

Do you see yourself engaging with SGCI again in the future? Perhaps when you begin your career?

My career goal is to teach math at the college level, so I can definitely see myself engaging with SGCI again, especially to help students realize what is out there for them.

Anything else to add about your internship experience?

The internship has helped me prepare for my future and dive further into the math community.
