2019 Summer Internship Reports: Michaud Reyna

Each year, our Workforce Development team offers summer internships for students interested in developing their gateway development skills. Eligible participants are placed at one of several SGCI partner sites. We will be sharing some of the experiences of our 2019 student interns in a series of blog posts entitled SGCI Summer Internship Reports.

Featured below is SGCI summer intern Michaud Reyna, a senior at Morehouse College.

"The experience I gained this summer at the Ohio Supercomputing Center was extremely beneficial to the progression of my career in computer science. I was introduced to technologies and domains of software engineering that I had been completely unaware of prior to the summer and which are now potential career paths."

Tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Michaud Reyna, I am a senior majoring in computer science at Morehouse College. Since a young age, I’ve been fascinated with engineering and the inner workings of “things” thought to be complex. I am extremely passionate about building software that both protects and empowers its users, especially in the current surveillance age. My technical hobbies include cloud, mobile, web, and bitcoin development. Outside of tech I enjoy spending time with my family, as well as allocating some time towards outdoor activities.

Where did your Internship take place, and who did you work for?

This summer, I worked as a Gateways Intern at the Ohio Supercomputing Center (OSC) located in Columbus, Ohio. The OSC provides easy access to powerful, high performance computing, storage, software resources, and staff expertise. OSC, specifically the gateways team, maintains Open OnDemand, an open-source software. My mentors on the gateways team included Alan Chalker, David Hudak, Erick Frenz, Morgan Rodgers, and Jeff Ohrstrom. I also had the honor to work with two other interns, Samir and Kenan. I am continuing my work with the OSC throughout the upcoming fall semester, in order to keep consistent with the Berkeley Labs remotely during this academic semester and hope to further expand my knowledge of working in the industry.

What are some things that you learned as a result of this internship?

This summer was definitely one of the most knowledge packed periods I’ve experienced. I began the summer with little to no knowledge of high performance computing. However, by the end of the summer, I had a thorough understanding of HPC systems and the importance of gateways for extending accessibility to HPC. I also picked up many Linux skills, Ruby on Rails experience, and tips on design patterns and principles. Personally, I became most attached to my work involved around Openstack, a popular open-source cloud computing framework.

Do you see yourself engaging with SGCI again in the future? Perhaps when you begin your career?

Yes, of course, this summer I was introduced to the growing demand for HPC resources globally. Aside from that, I have a genuine interest in the natural sciences and engineering, so being part of SCGI seems like the best of both worlds in my experience. I also look forward to attending and presenting a poster at Gateways 2019 about OpenStack OnDemand.

Anything else to add about your internship experience?

The experience I gained this summer at the Ohio Supercomputing Center was extremely beneficial to the progression of my career in computer science. I was introduced to technologies and domains of software engineering that I had been completely unaware of prior to the summer and which are now potential career paths. I would like to thank my supervisors Alan Chalker and David Hudak, my technical lead Eric Franz, my gateway mentors Morgan Rodgers and Jeff Ohrstrom, as well as all the staff at the Ohio Supercomputing Center for welcoming me as an intern and the constant overall support throughout the summer.
