SUNY at Albany seeks Network Engineer

Information Technology Services (ITS) at the University at Albany seeks applicants for a Network Engineer to install, configure and maintain the University network infrastructure, which spans multiple campuses and locations. This entry-level position plays a significant role in supporting the complex, evolving infrastructure needs of this sophisticated R1 research institution.

 

The Network Engineer works with other technology professionals to implement, administer, and troubleshoot routers, switches, copper and fiber cabling, wireless technologies, and unified communications infrastructure. The successful candidate has a working knowledge of these technologies, combined with passion and enthusiasm for expanding and improving their skills. This is an excellent opportunity for someone new to the field to advance and develop professionally.

 

The Network Engineer works closely with ITS staff, other departments, vendors, contractors, and service providers to grow and improve the network and assure smooth delivery of services. She/He/They possesses excellent communication and time management skills, can professionally represent ITS as needed and are adept at working independently or as a member of a team.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Participate in the design, installation, maintenance, repair, inspection, labeling, and inventory of all network infrastructure
  • Analyze and diagnose network problems, troubleshoot, recommend, and implement corrective actions
  • Plan, schedule, and implement upgrades and maintenance
  • Design up to date, efficient solutions that reduce operational effort and expense
  • Stay current with industry trends and network technologies, develop, and follow a professional development plan, and regularly provide subject matter expertise
  • Create, publish, and maintain up-to-date and accurate documentation, including system standards, service tickets, project plans, network diagrams, etc.
  • Effectively convey technical issues to stakeholders
  • Work well independently and in teams
  • Be prepared to work at multiple sites
  • Be available to provide scheduled support and consultation outside normal business hours, including occasional evenings, holidays, or weekends, within reasonable professional obligation and expectations


Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must clearly address their ability to work with a culturally diverse population in their application or during the interview.
  • At least two (2) years of experience implementing, upgrading and supporting wired and wireless network infrastructure.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization
  • Juniper and/or Cisco network certification(s)
  • Experience with Cisco and Juniper Mist Wireless
  • Experience with fiber optic and copper (voice and data) network design, support, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with data center switching and core infrastructure
