Back 2018 Summer Internship Reports: Ke'Darius Whitley

Each year, our Workforce Development team offers summer internships for students interested in developing their gateway development skills. Eligible participants are placed at one of several SGCI partner sites. We will be sharing some of the experiences of our 2018 student interns in a series of blog posts entitled SGCI Summer Internship Reports.

Featured below is SGCI summer intern Ke'Darius Whitley, a senior at Winston Salem State University.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, including what you are studying.

I am a rising senior at Winston Salem State University, majoring in Computer Science with a concentration in Internet Security. I'm a student leader on my campus, I am very involved, and I work in our Student Success Center as a writing consultant.

Where did your internship take place, and who did you work with?

This summer I interned at Texas at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at the University of Texas, Austin, and my mentor was Dr. Joe Stubbs.

What are some things that you learned as a result of this internship?

There were three main objectives that I was focused on during my internship this summer: Documentation, admin dashboard, and actor sample images. I learned advanced features within Python while using Django for frontend development. I also learned about REST APIs, and how to use Docker to build containers.

Do you see yourself engaging with SGCI again in the future? Perhaps when you begin your career?

Yes, I see myself engaging with SGCI again in the future. SGCI has helped me obtain a lot of knowledge in my major and helped me improve my skills as a developer.

Anything else to add about your internship experience?

This internship helped improve my web application development, using the command line in the Terminal, and with my overall confidence as a developer as well.
