XSEDE Extended Collaborative Support Services Monthly Symposium

The December XSEDE Extended Collaborative Support Services (ECSS) monthly symposium will take place on Tuesday, December 20 at 12 PM CST and will first feature speakers Trevor Cooper (San Diego Supercomputer Center) and Fugang Wang (Indiana University). Trevor and Fugang will describe and demonstrate Comet’s virtual cluster (VC) capabilities. VCs allow research teams to fully define their own software environment with a set of dynamically allocated virtual machines. There will be an overview on the design and architecture of the virtual cluster capability and how it compares to other virtualized and cloud services as well as a demonstration of how to build, configure, and manage virtual clusters using the Cloudmesh client. This will be a shortened version of material presented at an XSEDE16 tutorial.

The second speaker will be Nancy Wilkins-Diehr who will be describing the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI), one of the first implementation phase software institutes to be awarded through NSF’s Software Infrastructure for Sustained Innovation (S12) program. Nancy will explain how SGCI has been designed as a service organization to address challenges by offering services to and building community among the research communities developing gateways.
