Job Summary:

The Center for High Throughput Computing (CHTC) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks a Research Cyberinfrastructure Specialist to assist with its efforts to build distributed computing infrastructure supporting scientific research at campus, national, and international scale. The successful candidate will work closely with faculty in the CHTC to research, innovate, develop, and analyze the operation of large-scale distributed throughput computing deployments.

The role will advance the cutting-edge cyberinfrastructure being developed at the CHTC, most notably the Pelican and HTCondor software suites. The initial project for the specialist will be to improve the Pelican software suite, used to deliver hundreds of objects per second and over a petabyte of data per day from the nation's scientific data repositories. However, the position will support projects of different sizes, from machine-learning research managed by UW-Madison faculty to international scientific collaborations. The successful candidate will contribute to several projects in parallel, each lasting from days to months, with support from colleagues and leadership. Given the diverse projects that this position will support, flexibility and independent motivation are critical.

Work at CHTC will provide experience in a fast-paced, challenging environment and prioritize exploration of state-of-the-art technologies in multiple domains. CHTC has delivered software tools for the Hubble Space Telescope, DreamWorks movie rendering, and two Nobel prizes. We are looking for individuals who want to help change the world!

CHTC is a centerpiece of the University's global leadership in computational research. The center is housed in the Discovery Building and the upcoming Morgridge Hall, both situated at the center of campus. The Center is part of the Department of Computer Sciences, an internationally recognized department, and produces the HTCondor and Pelican software suites, operates a state-of-the-art computing facility with thousands of machines at UW-Madison, and is a leader building national-scale distributed high throughput computing cyberinfrastructure.

An ideal candidate will be a software developer who is interested in working in an academic setting and capable of working with faculty and staff to troubleshoot, design, code, test, and document proof-of-concept algorithms and systems in support of a wide range of scientific applications.

Responsibilities:

Applies computational, computer science, data science, and cyber infrastructure (CI) research and development principles to provide advanced and varied consultation on research and technology integration and development. Provides non-routine maintenance, planning, and advanced troubleshooting to ensure CI resources meet research needs. Provides guidance and training to other staff and serves as subject matter expert for internal stakeholders.

• 5% Serves as a CI domain expert, provides direct support of users, other staff providing support of users, and advanced computing systems
• 30% Provides expertise and experience in CI to lead troubleshooting, analysis, operation, and support of advanced computing systems and for research
• 45% Develops unique and custom Cyber Infrastructure solutions for research needs
• 15% Writes and updates documentation and tutorials supporting CI activities for research. May provide brief courses for internal researchers and external collaborators
• 5% Provides consultation and expertise for research proposals. May act as technical lead for cyber infrastructure projects. May serve as Co-Principal Investigator for a proposal

Education:

Required:
Bachelor's degree in computer science or any STEM discipline where large-scale computing is essential.

Preferred:
Master's degree in computer science or any STEM discipline with large-scale computing.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

- 2 years of professional work experience as a software developer post-bachelor's degree OR a master's degree in a STEM field.
- >1 year experience in scripting with Python.
- >1 year experience in programming with the C++ or Go languages.
- >1 year experience in working within a Linux or Unix command-line environment.
- Familiarity with common software development tools and workflows, including git / GitHub and issue tracking systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Strong written and spoken communication skills
- Experience with distributed computing and in the design, development, deployment, and maintenance of complex, integrated software systems.
- Experience in software development and maintenance as part of a larger team.
- Experience working in an academic setting (either as staff or graduate school).
- Using and creating containers with tools such as Docker or Podman.

Minimum $71,994 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The typical starting salary for this position is $72,000 - $103,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays and paid time off; competitive insurances and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.
