SGCI Partner BOINC Provides Volunteer Computing Through BOINC@TACC

The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) project, an SGCI Partner , has, for the past 17 years, provided volunteer computing services to help provide an alternative way of doing scientific computing that's usually done on grids, clusters, and clouds. The recently developed program BOINC@TACC is the first use of volunteer computing by a major high performance computing center.  Learn all about the BOINC@TACC program in this article from HPC Wire...

TACC-2-BOINC Project

BOINC, an SGCI partner , has teamed up with TACC to bring its open-source software platform for volunteer computing and client-server architecture to researchers using TACC resources. The TACC-2-BOINC project aims to grow the promising mode of distributed computing offered by BOINC. The project team behind TACC-2-BOINC includes Thomas Johnson, a 2018 SGCI Summer intern. Johnson was also recently selected to participate in the Computing4Change competition at SC18.  More...

Science Gateways Supporting Deep Earth Imaging

The Texas Advanced Computing Center recently published an article about how science gateways are making it possible for researchers to explore the existence of mantle plumes. Thus far, the plumes are hypothesized, mushroom-shaped upwellings of hot rock from deep in the Earth. With the help of supercomputer simulations, one team has, for the first time, detailed how plumes decelerate seismic waves and how plumes appear in seismic tomographic images of the Earth's mantle. This work could help...

SGCI's Maytal Dahan to Oversee TACC's Advanced Computing Interfaces Group

Maytal Dahan, who leads the SGCI's Scientific Software Collaborative, was recently promoted to the position of Director of Advanced Computing Interfaces (ACI) at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC). ACI at TACC includes the Web and Mobile Applications (WMA) and Cloud and Interactive Computing (CIC) groups, where Dahan will direct the overall strategy and management of science gateways and cloud services.  Read the article from TACC that announces her promotion and also...

Computational Science in the Cloud Institute at TACC

The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) is offering the Computational Science in the Cloud Institute as part of The TACC Institute Series. This 5-day workshop, taking place July 24-28, 2017, will provide participants with an end-to-end introduction to performing scientific simulations and analyses in a cloud-based environment. Participants will build their own virtual machines, setup Jupyter notebooks, learn to use APIs for provisioning and bootstrapping VMs, attach VMs to cloud and...

Data and Information Analytics Institute at TACC

The Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) is offering the Data and Information Analytics Institute as part of The TACC Institute Series. This 5-day workshop, taking place June 19-23, 2017, will introduce participants to best practices for large-scale data analysis using Python, R, and Hadoop/Spark, as well as an introduction to data management, working with databases, and machine learning. Participants will also receive introductions to the current state of the practice in...
