Each year, our Workforce Development team offers summer internships for students interested in developing their gateway development skills. For the summer of 2023, interns were placed at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC). We will be sharing some of our 2023 student interns' experiences in a series of blog posts entitled SGX3 Summer Internship Reports.
Featured below is SGX3 summer intern Dhanny Indrakusuma, a student at The University of Texas at Austin working on a Masters of Information Studies/Science.
- What project(s) are you currently working on this summer during the internship?
- Currently, I am actively engaged in the development of a full-stack application for Tapis alongside the Cloud and Interactive Computing (CIC) team at The Texas Advanced Computing Center. Our primary focus revolves around creating a machine learning hub application that aims to enhance the experience of non-technical individuals involved in machine learning research. By utilizing the TapisUI, users will be empowered with a more intuitive platform to undertake their machine learning endeavors. This entails the ability to fine-tune pre-existing machine learning models using their preferred datasets and conveniently monitor the progress of their machine learning tasks running on the HPC cluster.
- What are some of the things you have learned or are learning so far?
- I have gained valuable insights into the management of extensive software projects and how to seamlessly collaborate on code with team members. Moreover, I have learned how to develop front-end applications utilizing JavaScript, with a particular focus on React.js and Typescript.
- What do you hope to finish or accomplish before the end of your internship?
- I hope to be a better problem-solver and develop my skill in building and deploying cloud-native full-stack applications.
- I plan to work as a Software Engineer.
- Are there any ‘aha’ moments you would like to share that have happened during your internship so far?
- During our Tapis training session, I encountered a perplexing issue with the job I had submitted on the HPC cluster. Despite obtaining correct output during local testing on my computer, the output received through Tapis was consistently incorrect. It was not until a fellow intern kindly offered assistance and examined the situation that we discovered the root cause: I had inadvertently omitted a quotation mark when sending input through Tapis. This experience served as a valuable reminder of the criticality of being meticulous and detail-oriented in coding.
- Have you had any fun outings during your internship with fellow interns or visited parts of Austin yourself?
- When it's not too hot, I enjoy walking along Ladybird Lake or going for a kayak with fellow interns.
