SGX3 Summer Internship Reports: Swathi Vallabhajosyula

Each year, our Workforce Development team offers summer internships for students interested in developing their gateway development skills. For the summer of 2023, interns were placed at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC). We will be sharing some of our 2023 student interns' experiences in a series of blog posts entitled SGX3 Summer Internship Reports.

Featured below is SGX3 summer intern Swathi Vallabhajosyula, a student at The Ohio State University. Swathi is pursuing her Ph.D. (5th year) in Computer Science and Engineering in the research area of Applied Artificial Intelligence for Cyberinfrastructure (AI4CI).

  • What project(s) are you currently working on this summer during the internship?
    • I am working with Joe Stubbs and Anagha Jamthe on extending TAPIS to include microservices to profile applications for resource consumption and recommend walltime. (This is the existing framework https://github.com/ICICLE-ai/harp, and we want to integrate it with TAPIS)
  • What are some of the things you have learned or are learning so far?
    • I learned how to use TAPIS to execute jobs, and as part of this learning, I learned how to work with containers (after about ten years)
    • I am Learning to create RESTful APIs using Python and FLASK to expose the HARP HTTP API (microservices). Overall, I am trying to bring my existing workflows into action while hosting them as microservices.
  • What do you hope to finish or accomplish before the end of your internship?
    • I want to finish integrating version 1.0 of HARP with TAPIS so the profiling API calls can be integrated from anywhere within the TAPIS, along with the end user calls.
  • After you finish your degree, what would you like to do next?
    • I want to look out for post-doc or research associate positions that will help me towards a career in academia.
  • Are there any ‘aha’ moments you would like to share that have happened during your internship so far?
    • There are several:
      • The support TACC hosts to train teachers at high schools to enable students towards HPC and computing in general.
      • The diversity of students in the Internship programs at TACC. I got to meet people from different cultures and got to share short stories about our home countries.
      • The bi-weekly staff meetings and the achievements shared there - 1. The usage of academic clusters and how it enables science gateways to ease the usage of CIs for research scientists. 2. The publications. 3. New grants. 4. Travel stories and more.
  • Have you had any fun outings during your internship with fellow interns or visited parts of Austin yourself?
    • Exploring the UT Austin campus on non-TACC days finding new places to sit down and work with fellow cohorts. The library in Tower is awesome :) (It looked like a brighter version of Hogwarts Library)
    • I went out to see the Museum of Ice Cream and Blanton Museum of Art during the long weekend. "The Austin" was closed that day (hoping to see it some other time).
