What is your role within SGCI and what do you do?

I am a member of the Incubator team for SGCI. I help plan Science Gateways Bootcamps that occur bi-annually, which includes coordinating all the logistics such as scouting locations, planning meals, and working closely with the instructors to make sure the Bootcamp runs smoothly. I am also involved with onboarding new projects that submit a request to use Incubator consulting services, such as usability, business development, and cybersecurity.

How did you come to be a part of SGCI, and why were you intrigued by the opportunity?

I was offered the opportunity to start working with SGCI in the Fall of 2017. I began by helping with the logistics of the second Bootcamp. I took on this position when my colleague working for SGCI moved to a new position at Purdue University. I was excited to start in this role since the SGCI team is dynamic with diverse backgrounds. Everyone is very friendly and willing to help each other, which is extremely helpful when dealing with new challenges.

What is the most challenging part of your work for SGCI?

The most challenging part of my work with SGCI is planning the Bootcamps. While it is exciting to help plan and coordinate an experience that is unlike any conference experience, it is also challenging when coordinating with venues.

How else are you involved in the technology or gateway community?

On top of my work for SGCI, I am also a Science Gateway Manager for the HUBzero Platform. I work closely with our hosted clients by providing them with updates on development projects, information about security updates, and assistance with support issues or questions. I also manage HUBzero’s communication channels by providing a monthly newsletter, hosting monthly meetings and tutorials, and sharing updates from the team and our Hubs through our online social media accounts.

What do you most like to do in your free time?

I am currently spending my free time in school. I am graduating this semester with an M.S. in Strategic Communication. At this time I am not pursuing a Ph.D., so I am looking forward to taking a break. Outside of work and school, I am the President of the 42nd Royal Highlanders Board of Directors; a non-profit organization focused on performing traditional bagpipe, fife, and drum field music from the 18th century. I am not a profound musician myself; I do tinker around with my Irish button accordion. During a typical week, I enjoy hanging out with my two dogs, Nukka and Piper, and going to my local CrossFit gym. On the weekends I enjoy camping with my husband and traveling to new places.

If you were a superhero, what superpower would you have?

The ability to read and write in any language. I have always been intrigued by linguistics and the power of communication. I took six years of Spanish in high-school and college and have dabbled in learning French, but I am not fluent in either. I would love to be fluent in Spanish, Japanese, French, German, Latin, and Greek.
