2020 Summer Internship Reports: Pablo Calix

Each year, our Workforce Development team offers summer internships for students interested in developing their gateway development skills. Participants are placed at one of several SGCI partner sites. We will be sharing some of our 2020 student interns' experiences in a series of blog posts entitled SGCI Summer Internship Reports.
Featured below is SGCI summer intern Pablo Calix, a student at College of Lake County.

Tell us a little about yourself?
I am in my last semester at CLC, looking to get my associate's degree in science. I plan to transfer to ASU for next year and study in their Environmental Science program.
Where did your Internship take place, and who did you work for?
I am currently working with ESIP, because of COVID-19, I worked with them via Zoom.
What are some things that you learned as a result of this internship?
I was able to see how big of a community ESIP helps and how willing to help everyone was. I learned how important communication was when working with a group and also how vital ESIP is. I learned that sometimes when you do not answer a question, it never hurts to ask for help. ESIP helped hone down on these skills that will ultimately help me in my professional future.
Do you see yourself engaging with SGCI again in the future? Perhaps when you begin your career?
I definitely want to keep working with SGCI. I believe that SGCI catapulted me into the field I wanted to be in and create connections. SGCI helped me learn many professional skills and provided an edge ahead of many when looking for future employment.
Anything else to add about your internship experience?
I was able to see how important being able to locate data is. I learned that sometimes information could be out there for you, but the only issue you might encounter is finding it. As ESIPs first batch of interns, I feel like they did a great job keeping us busy with tasks that interested us. They helped me make connections with professionals and learn more about the environmental science field.
