The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) is hiring a Scientific Applications Engineer for its Scientific Applications (SciApps) group. SciApps's mission is to provide a comprehensive scientific software environment on the high performance computing (HPC) systems for supporting client research and helping clients efficiently utilize OSC’s HPC resources. 

 

OSC accelerates discovery for Ohio’s academic and commercial researchers by providing accessible, reliable and secure high performance computing power at a fraction of the cost of alternatives, along with expert consultation and secure storage.

 

Responsibilities of the Scientific Applications Engineer include:
 

  • Maintaining the scientific software stack, including installation, testing, and updating license servers. 

  • Reviewing client requests for new software to be installed, gathering information about the software and helping to identify internal and external requirements to support it. 

  • Assisting in performing software tests and maintaining the testing system for the software environment.

  • Investigating potential new tools and best practices to improve processes.

  • Responding to support requests pertaining to software, troubleshooting issues and providing documentation for clients and other OSC staff.

 

The Scientific Applications Engineer will have the opportunity to work with leading-edge HPC technologies and engage with domain experts. A hybrid work schedule is an option.

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, information technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 2 years of relevant work experience

  • Proficient in Linux command line environment, scripting language including shell and Python

  • Eligible to work in an export-controlled environment

 

Desired Education/Experience:

  • High performance computing experience: familiar with Slurm, MPI or GPU computing

  • Experience with software installation and package management tools, containers (e.g. Docker, Podman or Singularity/Apptainter), monitoring/testing frameworks or license managers (FlexNet) 

  • Research experiences in a science domain with HPC

  • Experience with a programming language (C/C++, Python or Fortran) and software development tools such as an IDE or compiler (GNU, Intel, NVIDIA HPC SDK)
