Call for Participation for Gateways 2024

Call for Participation for Science Gateways 2024 Annual Conference

The Gateways conference series is hosted each year at a location in the US. Gateways 2024 is excited to be coming to Bozeman, MT! Join us as we continue to bridge the connection between science and gateways. Gateways 2024 will have a robust program, open access proceedings, and a special journal publication opportunity for all accepted paper submissions.

Overview

Gateways 2024 will take place Tuesday, October 8 - Thursday, October 10, 2024 at the Best Western Plus GranTree Inn in Bozeman, MT. Tutorials will take place in the two weeks before the conference online.

Science gateways are end-to-end solutions with easy-to-use interfaces enabling the application of complex research infrastructures such as computing and data infrastructures, instruments, and other domain-specific resources to support research and education. Science Gateways are also called research portals, virtual research environments, eScience, virtual labs, eResearch, digital repositories, or research cyberinfrastructure.

Gateways 2024 is an opportunity for users, developers and providers to showcase their science gateways  accommodating teaching, empowering and engaging research, and providing technologies to various communities. It will also offer diverse options for sharing and publishing work and networking in the community. The format includes tutorial sessions, presentations, panels, posters, demos, and a BYOP: Bring Your Own Portal.

Being that Bozeman is in the big sky country, we want to focus on the theme of expanding the horizons of science gateways to include new communities and new fields. We welcome a wide variety of topics, as listed below. In your submissions, we invite you to consider how we can build bridges within the gateways community, between science and cyberinfrastructure, between academia and industry, and between gateways and the larger public.

Relevant topics for submissions

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Architectures, frameworks, and technologies for science gateways

  • Science gateways sustaining productive, collaborative communities

  • Support for scalability and data-driven methods in science gateways

  • Improving the reproducibility of science in science gateways

  • Science gateway usability, portals, workflows, and tools

  • Software engineering approaches for scientific work

  • Aspects of science gateways, such as security and stability

  • AI and ML for science gateways

  • Social research on science gateways

  • Science gateways curriculum impact

  • Use cases and lessons learned from science gateways

  • Interconnection of domain and technology

Presentation and Publication Options

We invite the submission of papers and abstracts related to science gateways. All contributions will be subject to standard peer review on quality and relevance. This will apply to tutorial sessions, papers, panels, posters, demos, and BYOP (Bring Your Own Portal). Tutorial sessions, papers, panels, posters, and demos will be published openly accessible in Zenodo. Please note that authors of papers will be invited to submit an extended and updated version of their paper for a special issue journal on science gateways.

Tutorial submissions are due May 3, 2024.

Paper, demo, and panel submissions are due May 27, 2024.

Poster and BYOP - Bring Your Own Portal submissions are due July 29, 2024.

Papers, Demos and Panels

Presenters of papers and demos will be given a 15-minute time slot (plus 5 minutes for questions) to provide a summary and update to their work. Panels will be 60 minutes long.

Submissions must not exceed 2-4 pages. In particular, we encourage submissions from application scientists and community members reporting their experiences with science gateways, requirements for future gateways, and visions for technologies.

All paper, demo, and panel submissions are due May 27, 2024.

Tutorials

Tutorials will receive slots of 1½ hours  or 3 hours and will be held virtually September 23 - October 4, 2024. A 3-hour tutorial will be presented in two 90-minute segments with a 30-minute break in the middle. Topics can include hands-on gateway-building techniques, gateway management issues, community-building activities, or the use of a specific tool.

Tutorial submissions must not exceed 2-4 pages. Please specify:

  1. Your proposed tutorial length,

  2. Recommended skill level (e.g., beginner, intermediate, advanced) and prerequisites (e.g., familiarity with specific software or technologies), and

  3. The technology and/or software requirements necessary for someone to participate in the tutorial (e.g., do they need to install software or create an account before the tutorial?).

Tutorial submissions are due May 3, 2024.

BYOP - Bring Your Own Portal

This year we will dedicate a portion of the program to allow gateway owners to show off their gateways. The submission process to participate in this portion of the program is straightforward: the BYOP submission type will collect your gateway name, the URL of your gateway, a few sentences describing your gateway, and one slide providing details of your gateway in an easy to digest visual. Imagine this session as a type of poster session, but instead of a poster, you will have your laptop with your gateway loaded.

Please note that we cannot guarantee there will be power for every single gateway that participates in this session, thus please make sure your laptop can handle an hour of displaying your gateway without the need for power.

BYOP - Bring Your Own Portal - submissions are due July 29, 2024.

Posters

The poster session will take place October 8, 2024 during the conference reception. Authors are expected to bring a printed poster. Submissions must not exceed 500 words. Posters should be a maximum width of 30 inches, and a maximum length of 45 inches. We have poster/bulletin boards that are shared by two poster presenters. Please keep posters within the maximum size so they do not overlap with the other poster on the bulletin board. On October 8, 2024, you will be invited to hang your poster during the day before the start of the evening reception and poster session. One author must be at the poster during the reception to answer any questions. At the end of the reception, awards will be given to the authors of the best poster, which will be voted on by the conference attendees.

Authors that are accepted are expected to have their poster hung and ready to display prior to the start of the poster session. At least one author must be present to answer questions about the poster.

Poster submissions are due July 29, 2024.
